Riverside Quarter in Wandsworth, SW18, was acquired in December 2000. The 10.2 acre site, off Osiers Road, was the former Shell oil storage depot and London Town, together with joint venture partners, FairBriar and LCR, will create a waterfront scheme with 315 private residential units, 107 units of affordable housing and 150,000 square feet of commercial space. Several months were dedicated to removing the oil from the site, using a dual vacuum extraction method and the remediation of the site has been approved by the Environmental Agency and Wandsworth Borough Councils Environmental Health Office. London Town has also undertaken to create inter-tidal terraces on the corner of the rivers Thames and Wandle to provide a haven for wildlife and in the place of two old jetties, which are currently inhabited by shags, cormorants and herons, four bird barges are to be provided. Furthermore, the company is creating an ecological roof on the affordable housing block, which will encourage nesting birds and insects. There will also be a marina for up to 16 houseboats.

The composition of this residential scheme evolves from the proximity to the River and addresses the sweep of the river bank at this point along the Thames. The scheme relates to the existing buildings at both the western and eastern extremities of the site and articulates the movement of the River between the two points. The design of the elevation to the river has a system of layers that allow a Brise Soleil façade giving enclosure to the glazed Winter Gardens to the riverside of the living areas in each of the apartments. The Brise Soleil provides protection from the heat gain to the predominantly glazed areas on the river elevation and adds further articulation to this elevation. The mass of the structure becomes progressively more solid to address the Grosvenor Road elevation where the ancillary accommodation and common areas are located. The development is finally screened by the existing mature London Plane Trees. Secure gated entry and a series of connecting arcades access the development. Each block has separate stair and lift cores to access the apartments, rising to private entrances to the penthouse units. The private accommodation offered to each apartment is of extraordinary projecting balconies provide the river elevation with an irregular and finely detailed profile when viewed obliquely from the river.
